5-Star Sandton Towers (InterContinental Johannesburg)

This is the second of the two posts on our Sandton Staycation. As I said here, it is quite embarrassing that this post is about eight months overdue… scratch that. This post is almost a year overdue. However, this was already prepared… sort of, and it isn’t totally outdated, because being one of the best 5-star hotels in the city, in Sandton, the richest square mile in Africa, it remains a hotel of choice. The only condition is that there is not a requirement for the accommodation to be a budget hotel.

Coincidentally, it is almost Christmas and this 5-star stay of ours was on Christmas.

Christmas came, and it went. Even Valentine’s Day has come and gone. Our trip to the United States of America is now but a memory to cherish… and to write about, hopefully, before Christmas or another trip to the USA.

Traveling in America for almost a month made me appreciate a little more the hotels in South Africa. For the price, we get so much more and way better than what anyone would get in the States.

Last year, we spent Christmas in California. The year before, we stayed home (in Johannesburg), so I decided to experience the city’s 5-star hotel for which we would not normally willingly pay because it is ridiculous to spend money on a hotel fifteen to twenty minutes away from home.

We were at the Sandton Sun on Christmas eve and we checked out and walked across Fifth Street to InterContinental Johannesburg Sandton Towers.

That’s hubby driving the car from one hotel (Sandton Sun) basement parking to another hotel (Sandton Towers) basement parking. The usual busy roads around Sandton City were quiet on Christmas Day.Β

What’s with Sandton? Or Sandton City? Let me get this Sandton City bit out of the way. For Sandton, Africa’s richest square mile, Google will have some information.

What made me fall in love with Sandton was Sandton City. Basically, when I said Sandton, I meant Sandton City. I have a little more knowledge now and I say Sandton City when I mean the mall. Sandton is where Sandton City is.

Sandton City was my favorite mall. It is still my favorite mall. I just do not enjoy going to malls anymore. But, if I want a proper shopping spree or window shopping, I will still pick Sandton City. It still feels like home now as it used to almost twenty years ago.

Gauteng Tourism has this on their website about Sandton City.

But this post is not about Sandton City, the mall. I would like to share our day in Sandton Towers.

As Sandton City was rather quiet on that Christmas day, we were able to check in earlier than usual. Immediately after checking in, we went to lunch.

The service was excellent and the food was delicious. I had no complaint whatsoever.

We didn’t have dessert at lunch but I did have this later on. It was tasty.

Overall, dining at the Sandton Towers was a delight. We had our supper in the room. I was unwell during Christmas and I was slightly worse that evening than during the day.

Here was our spread:

As expected, the service at InterContinental Johannesburg was superb. I didn’t have to go to reception to swipe my card for additional charges. Instead, the credit card machine was brought up to our room. Granted I was sick and in my robe. They didn’t want a guest parading downstairs in a hotel gown.

The room itself, I must say isn’t as lovely as the Sandton Sun room but it was great all the same.

But, the bathroom is a whole lot better than that of our room in Sandton Sun.

While I didn’t get to check out Sandton Sun’s pool area, I was strong enough to explore on this day. However, it wasn’t a very hot day to warrant a dip, and I was really under the weather. Next time… πŸ™‚

Here is the hotel’s gym, which we didn’t use. We must still train ourselves to get into fitness.

Then again, remember, I was not well. Instead, I did a lot of relaxing in the room.

We will have to do this again!

What about you? What are you waiting for? Come to Africa. Come to South Africa. Enjoy some luxury in Johannesburg, the northern suburbs to be more specific, without getting into debt.
