Do razor clams feel pain?
Do razor clams feel pain? Translation: Bivalves have a very simple nervous system which is not aggregated in anything like a brain. My conclusion: Bivalves do not have hardware or response consistent with the ability to feel pain.
How do you know if razor clams are dead?
Check whether the clams are closed – any open shells should close when gently tapped – if not, you should discard them. If the outside of the shells are damaged, they too should be discarded.
How long do you cook clams for?
Steam the clams on medium heat, with the lid on, for 5 to 7 minutes. Clams cook like popcorn: some cook faster than others. Stir or shake the pot during cooking so that all the clams have room to open up.
Can you overcook clams?
If some of the clams have not opened, it is possible that either they were not cooked long enough, or that they are bad and should be discarded. Be careful not to cook the clams for too long, as overcooked clams are tough and unpleasant to eat.
Can you eat dead clams?
Clams are exceedingly perishable; there is no length of time after they are dead that you should eat them. They should always be killed as part of the cooking process. They may open (they are naturally filter feeders, and open to try and feed and respire), but if tapped should close indicating they are still alive.
